On 22 October 2003, with the debut of the third generation Legacy at the Frankfurt Auto Show, the Outback name was being used in all markets with the launch of the third generation Outback crossover, which until then had only been used in export markets. The second generation Outback remained on sale in 2003 in the Americas. Aside from small differences in trim, the Outback shares almost all of its components with the Legacy donor model.
