The first generation Impreza was announced on 22 October 1992 and released in Japan in November, with front wheel drive or all wheel drive and a choice of four door sedan or five door Touring wagon. It rode on a shortened version of the Legacy floor pan, and the older EA series engines of the Leone gave way to the new EJ series. A two door coupe was added in late 1995. The turbocharged WRX debuted in November 1992, and Subaru later made all wheel drive standard on the American Impreza. Its model years run from 1992 to 2000.
