For the 1985 model year Pontiac reused the Grand Am name for a new compact car to replace the aging and unpopular Phoenix, using the new for 1985 N body. The Grand Am shared the same front wheel drive platform as the Buick Somerset and the Oldsmobile Calais, and all Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan. Its model years run from 1985 to 1991. The 1986 model year added a sedan and the SE trim, and the 1989 model year brought a new front and rear fascia.
