In 1986 a sedan and a sportier SE trim were added to the Grand Am. The front wheel drive compact had been reintroduced for 1985 on the N body platform and shared its design with the Buick Somerset and the Oldsmobile Calais, and it was assembled in Lansing, Michigan. The 2.5 liter Tech IV four cylinder with throttle body fuel injection remained the base engine, and a Buick built 3.0 liter V6 was optional.
