The only changes for 1991 were the addition of an anti lock braking system as standard equipment on all Grand Am SE models, which was not available on the LE, and a redesigned shifter for all 1991 model year cars fitted with a five speed transmission. It was the last year of the third generation Grand Am, which had begun for 1985, and for 1992 the Grand Am entered its fourth generation. The 1991 car was the seventh model year of the generation.
