The BRAT was Subaru's four wheel drive coupe utility, built from 1978 to 1994 on the Leone and sold in different markets as the Brumby, the MV Pickup and the Shifter. It was developed in Japan in 1977 at the request of the president of Subaru of America to meet the demand for small trucks in North America, and was made for export only. Plastic rear facing jump seats in the cargo bed let Subaru classify it as a passenger car and avoid the chicken tax on light trucks. This site gives every generation and every model year its own page, in 2 generations: the first generation (1978 to 1982); the second generation (1983 to 1994).
