The BRAT of 1989 was in its twelfth year, built on the Leone, which the larger Legacy wagon superseded in popularity that year. It remained a four wheel drive coupe utility based on the Leone, sold in Europe, Australia, Latin America and New Zealand, and powered by the Subaru EA engine. The BRAT was four wheel drive and powered by the Subaru EA engine. It was an export only model, never officially sold in Japan, and became a popular grey import there.
