The 1983 and 1984 models could be purchased with an optional turbocharged engine of 94 horsepower. All turbocharged models were equipped with a three speed automatic transmission with a single range, push button four wheel drive. The BRAT of 1984 was a second generation four wheel drive coupe utility with Subaru's EA-81 1.8 liter boxer engine. It was an export only model, never officially sold in Japan, and became a popular grey import there.
