Unlike the first generation, whose wide body was designed and engineered in Australia, the second generation inherited the already wide body Japanese Mitsubishi platform. In July 1991 MMAL introduced an upmarket derivative called the Mitsubishi Verada, with a 3.0 liter V6 engine and codenamed the KR series. Later in 1991 Mitsubishi reintroduced a GLX base model that was only carbureted and priced lower than the other models. MMAL estimated that between 1989 and the wagon's arrival in 1992 the total investment totalled some 389 million Australian dollars. Its model years run from 1991 to 1995.
