In April and July 1996 MMAL respectively released a new generation Magna and Verada, which were broadly based on the pillarless Japanese second generation Diamante. The cost of the Australian project was some 500 million Australian dollars and both cars won the 1996 Wheels Car of the Year award, with judges praising the car's value for money. The third and final iteration added all wheel drive from 2002 and received a substantial styling update in 2003. Its model years run from 1996 to 2005.
