For 1988 the bi plane rear spoiler of the XR4Ti was replaced by a simpler single level wing, with a larger glass panel in the rear hatch, and the standard alloy wheels were changed to a BBS style cast wire spoke model. Ford dropped the Merkur name in 1988 and began to refer to its two European imports by their model names only, as the Scorpio went on sale as a 1988 model. The XR4Ti was a version of the European Ford Sierra XR4i adapted to United States regulations.
