1989 was the last year for the XR4Ti, which was discontinued in early 1989 when new passive restraint requirements would have meant an expensive redesign. Sales dropped off rapidly after 1986, so that in its last year fewer than 3,000 XR4Tis were sold. It was the last vehicle imported by Ford into North America from Germany until 2016, when the Ford Focus RS was introduced. It had a turbocharged Lima inline four, a 5 speed manual and an optional 3 speed automatic.
