The Sable was on the Car and Driver Ten Best list again for 1991, the last year of its first generation. The Sable competed with the Grand Marquis as the highest selling Mercury, a position they held between them, and the Sable wagon was the Mercury midsize wagon. The Sable sedan shared only its doors and roof stamping with the Taurus. The first generation Sable was a mid size car, offered as a four door sedan and a five door station wagon.
