For the 1992 model year the second generation Sable was introduced. Following the addition of a driver side airbag in 1990, the Sable gained a passenger side airbag as an option for 1992, to become standard in 1993. Wagons equipped with the front bench seat and rear folding seat could seat eight people, making the Sable wagon the sole eight passenger vehicle offered by Lincoln Mercury. The second generation Sable was a mid size car, offered as a four door sedan and a five door station wagon.
