The hydraulically controlled AOD transmission, in use since 1980, was replaced for 1993 by the electronically controlled AOD E. The 1993 Grand Marquis was produced solely as a four door sedan, in GS base and LS deluxe trims, at St. Thomas Assembly, and the redesigned car proved more fuel efficient than its predecessors while Ford used a loophole in fuel economy rules to sell full size V8 sedans. It was built at the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Southwold, Ontario, with the Ford Crown Victoria.
