The Custom saw a continued lack of popularity for 1955, as the introduction of the Montclair, a premium sedan line above the Monterey, continued to encourage sales away from the Custom. The Custom remained the base model series of Mercury, positioned below the Monterey and the new Montclair, as a four door or two door sedan. Standard equipment included broadcloth upholstery, rubber floor mats and an electric clock. The Custom was positioned below the Monterey, which was introduced in 1952 as the upper trim package.
