The AR Telstar reached Australia in May 1983 in GL, S and Ghia sedan and TX5 and TX5 Ghia hatchback form, assembled at Ford's Broadmeadows plant from complete knock down kits. It replaced the Cortina there, and was also assembled in New Zealand and in Taiwan from this year. Ford later replaced it in most markets with the Mondeo, which was developed as a world car. The Telstar was a Mazda 626 with Ford badges and some local styling, sold where Ford wanted a mid size car.
