The first Mondeo was introduced on 23 November 1992, with sales starting on 22 March 1993, after a development that cost Ford about six billion dollars. Built at Genk in Belgium for Europe, it replaced the Sierra there and the Telstar in Asia, and its design was shared between Ford in Dearborn and Ford of Europe. It was front wheel drive with a rare four wheel drive option. A facelift in October 1996 is known as the Mk II. Its model years run from 1993 to 1999.
