The Zetec engine was thoroughly revised in 1998, becoming far more refined at high revolutions. In December 1998 Ford released in Europe a coupe based on the Mk II Mondeo, the Ford Cougar, sold as the Mercury Cougar in North America. It shared the 2.0 liter four and 2.5 liter V6 engines, the transmissions, partly the suspension and the floorpan with the Mondeo, though its body shell was unique to the Cougar.
