The BG Laser went on sale in Japan in 1989 with a new coupe style liftback and a 180 PS turbo four wheel drive model as a companion to the Familia GT-X. In Australia the KE carried on, and in mid 1989 all models were fitted with a high mounted rear stop lamp ahead of new design rules. Buyers in Australia and New Zealand often did not realise the Ford was based on the Mazda 323. The Laser was a Ford badged version of the Mazda Familia, and it was one of the smaller cars in the Ford range of that period.
