The Mark III Cortina, which went on sale on 23 October 1970, was the first built after the merger of Ford of Britain and Ford of Germany into Ford of Europe, and it converged the British Cortina and the German Taunus onto one platform. It had Detroit style coke bottle lines, double wishbone front suspension instead of MacPherson struts, and a wider range of trim levels from Base through L, XL, GT and GXL. A facelift in late 1973 brought the TD with a flatter dashboard. Its model years run from 1970 to 1975.
