In 1975 the Mark III Cortina was in its last full year before replacement. It had trims from Base through L, XL, GT and GXL and was an almost identical twin of the German Ford Taunus, the result of the unification of Ford's European range. It was Britain's top selling car until 1976, when it was overtaken by the Mark 2 Escort, and its successor, the squarer Mark IV, was readied for launch as a more conservative rebody that fleet buyers would welcome and that kept the running gear almost unchanged.
