The first Viper, the SR I, was an RT/10 roadster powered by an 8.0 liter aluminum V10 rated at 400 horsepower. It was conceived at Chrysler in 1988 after Bob Lutz suggested a modern Cobra, and 85 engineers formed Team Viper in 1989. Two pre-production cars were the pace car for the 1991 Indianapolis 500, and the car went on sale in January 1992 at $52,000. It had no exterior door handles or key cylinders, no air conditioning, which was added as an option for 1994 and 1995, and no driver aids. Its model years run from 1992 to 1995.
