The fourth generation Monte Carlo was restyled for 1981 with the other General Motors mid size formal coupes, with a smoother profile and vertical taillights similar to those of 1973 to 1977. The SS returned in 1983 with the 305 HO V8, the Aerocoupe with a sloped rear window arrived in 1986 for NASCAR use, and the line ended in an abbreviated 1988 model year. Its model years run from 1981 to 1988.
