The third generation Monte Carlo was downsized for 1978 along with all General Motors intermediate cars, in response to the 1973 oil embargo and fuel economy requirements, and was 700 to 800 pounds lighter and 15 inches shorter than the 1977 car with more interior and trunk space. Its rear wheel drive A body platform was redesignated the G body when the front wheel drive A body cars appeared for 1982. Its model years run from 1978 to 1980.
