The body was restyled for 1981 with the other General Motors mid size formal coupes, the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Pontiac Grand Prix and Buick Regal, with a smoother profile and new vertical taillights. A total of 3,027 Monte Carlo Turbos were built for 1981, and they differed from other Monte Carlos by a small hood scoop on the left side of the hood. Only one team attempted to use the smoother Monte Carlo in NASCAR Cup racing at first.
