The E31 8 Series was discontinued in 1999 due to poor sales, and the 840Ci stayed in production until May 1999. BMW had sold 30,609 cars in all markets, and the model range then lay unused for nearly two decades, until it was reintroduced in 2018 with the second generation, the G15, which succeeded the F12 6 Series. The nameplate would only be used again with the arrival of the second generation in 2018.
