The first TL was a four-door pillared hardtop with frameless windows that took over from the Vigor for 1996. It came as the 2.5 TL, with the 176 horsepower five-cylinder from the Vigor and a firmer suspension, and as the 3.2 TL, with the 200 horsepower V6 from the second-generation Legend and a more luxurious ride. Both engines were mounted lengthways. It was built in Japan, where it was sold as the Honda Inspire and Saber, and it was the first Acura to adopt letter naming.
