In 1998 several options that had cost extra became standard equipment on the 2.5 TL. It was the last year the TL was built in Japan, since the car was being redesigned to be made in the American market, and the 2.5 TL with its five-cylinder engine did not continue after it. A concept car called the TL-X was shown in 1998 as a preview of the second generation which would debut in late 1998 and be built in Ohio.
