The 1997 model year brought the Integra Type R to North America, where it replaced the RS as the lightest and least equipped version, with a 195 horsepower VTEC engine and a stiffened chassis. The GS trim came back for the first time since the second generation, and the cassette player gave way to a CD player. The Integra was also on the 10Best list for the sixth time. The Type R was sold only as a liftback, had no air conditioning, leather or cruise control as standard, and used lighter glass and body panels to save weight.
