In February 1986 the bonds between the Celica and the Supra were cut, and the A70 was introduced as a stand alone model. It had a 2,954 cc inline six making 200 horsepower, a turbocharged version came in 1987, and further refinement of the turbo raised power to 232 horsepower in 1989. Options included 3 channel ABS and an electronic damper system, a targa top was offered in all years, and for 1991 the Japanese Supra got the 2.5 liter twin turbo 1JZ-GTE with a facelift.
