Toyota created the Celica Supra after North American dealers asked for a rival to the popular Datsun 280Z. It was a longer, six cylinder version of the Celica, sold in Japan as the Celica XX with two straight six engines and five trim packages, and it was first exported outside Japan in January 1979. The A40 got a 2.6 liter SOHC 4M-E engine, and in August 1980 for the 1981 model year the 2.8 liter 5M-E shared with the Crown replaced it, giving the car a new chassis code of MA47.
