In August 1980, for the 1981 model year, the Supra received an upgrade in displacement with the 2.8 liter 5M-E engine shared with the Crown S110, and a new chassis code, MA47, was given because of the change of engine and transmission. A Sports Performance Package also became an option. It was model year 3 of 4 in the Toyota Supra (first generation, A40 and A50), 1978 to 1981, coming after the 1979 model year and before the 1981 model year.
