With the introduction of the second generation in April 1974 there was a clearer difference between the Sprinter Trueno and the Corolla Levin through design. Due to incompatibility with Japanese emission regulations the coupes were discontinued in November 1975. Toyota reintroduced the twin coupes in January 1977 with a minor facelift and the fuel injected 2T-GEU version of the engine with emission control, and in September 1977 launched a Black Trueno limited edition of 550 units.
