The first Sienna was launched by Toyota in 1997 as a front wheel drive 1998 model, replacing the rear drive Previa. It was built on an extended Camry platform, marketed as the Camry of minivans, and came with a 3.0 liter V6 of 194 horsepower in CE, LE and XLE trims, built in Georgetown, Kentucky. It was unusual for its safety content, with optional side airbags and stability control, and a class action settlement later covered the engine oil sludge problem found in Toyota V6 engines of the period.
