The first generation Passo was developed under Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, and in Japan was sold with a 996 cc or a 1.3 liter engine and in front wheel drive or four wheel drive. It was designed for European tastes with a larger and stockier frame, weighing about 940 kg. It was restyled on 25 December 2006, and its Daihatsu twin was sold as the Boon, the Sirion abroad and, from 25 May 2005, the Perodua Myvi in Malaysia.
