The GR Yaris was unveiled at the 2020 Tokyo Auto Salon as a three door hatchback with four wheel drive designed to meet World Rally Championship homologation rules. In April 2022 the Light Package variant went on sale, reducing weight to 1,110 kg. On 12 January 2024 at the Tokyo Auto Salon the car received a facelift and, for the first time, an 8 speed automatic option with paddle shifters, and the RC grade replaced the RS in January 2024.
