The first generation Celica was shown at the Tokyo show in October 1970 with the Toyota Carina and marketed from December of that year, as a two door coupe aimed at the North American market. A fastback Liftback joined it in Japan in April 1973 and for export in July 1974. Facelifts came in August 1972, January 1974 in Japan, and October 1975 for the lineup, and the 1976 update was the largest. In North America the first Celica ST of 1971 used a 1.9 liter 8R engine.
