The bZ4X concept was revealed on 19 April 2021 and presented at Auto Shanghai the same day, after Toyota had previewed its electric designs in June 2019. The Japanese version was announced in April 2022 and launched on 12 May 2022 as a lease only offer, with the North American version unveiled at the Los Angeles show in 2021 and sales in the United States in 2022. In May 2025 Toyota announced a mid cycle refresh aimed at criticisms of the first model, with more efficient motors and design updates.
