The first Aygo came from a decision made on 12 July 2001 by the presidents of Toyota and PSA Peugeot Citroen to produce a small car and share the development costs. It was first shown at the Geneva show in 2005, with sales beginning in July 2005 as a three or five door hatchback. It was built at the TPCA joint venture in Kolin in the Czech Republic alongside the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107, and had facelifts in 2009 and 2012 that changed the bumper and lamps.
