The first generation Avanza was unveiled on 11 December 2003 and released in Indonesia on 15 January 2004, the first joint project of Toyota and Daihatsu in that country, with development led by Toyota chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa. It was assembled at the Astra Daihatsu Motor plant in Sunter, Jakarta, with 61 percent local parts, and launched with 1.3 liter grades. It received its first facelift in July 2006 and an update in October 2008, and in Malaysia Perodua assembled it from kits sent from Indonesia.
