The first generation of the Renault Samsung SM7, coded EX2, was an executive car revealed on 30 November 2004 as the company's high-end model. Work on the EX project began in October 2002 on the Nissan J31 platform, which it shared with the Nissan Teana in Asian markets and the sixth-generation Maxima elsewhere, though the design was altered to look more solid and it carried extensive standard safety equipment. It came in SE, XE, LE, XE35 and RE35 trims with a Nissan 2.3 litre or 3.5 litre VQ V6 engine. A facelifted version called New Art arrived in 2008, before the second generation took over in 2011.
