The first generation Grand Am was a rear wheel drive midsize car built on the LeMans A platform, introduced in the fall of 1972 as a 1973 model, and it was built at Pontiac's main assembly plant in Pontiac, Michigan. It featured a deformable urethane nose, and was one of only three General Motors cars to debut radial ply tires as standard. Since the Grand Am sat between total luxury and total economy its sales declined and it was discontinued in 1975. Its model years run from 1973 to 1975.
