For 1987 Mercury introduced the Tracer to replace the Lynx as its subcompact model range. It was the first Mercury since its 1960 full size range to not share any commonality with Ford in North America, derived from the Ford Laser, itself a variant of the Mazda 323. It was offered as three door and five door hatchbacks, with a five door station wagon added in the United States for 1988. Its model years run from 1987 to 1989.
