For 1968 Mercury introduced the Montego as part of its intermediate Comet product line, a counterpart of the Fairlane and Torino. For 1969 the 250 cubic inch six replaced the 200 as standard and a 351 V8 was added as an option, with a 428 Cobra Jet V8. For 1970 the Mercury intermediate range dropped the Comet name entirely. Its model years run from 1968 to 1971. The Montego used the Fairlane and Torino platform with a choice of six cylinder and V8 engines.
