The CLS, first called the CLS-Class, was a series of executive cars built by Mercedes-Benz from December 2003 to August 2023. The original C219 was a four-door sedan on the E-Class platform that the maker marketed as a four-door coupe, a body shape that other makers then copied. It was styled by Michael Fink and developed by IVM Automotive, a subsidiary of the roof specialist Edscha, from the Vision CLS concept, and it debuted at the 2004 New York International Auto Show under DaimlerChrysler. A shooting brake estate joined the line with the second generation, which also brought 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
