The first generation Lexus ES, chassis code V20 and designated VZV21, debuted in January 1989 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit as part of the launch of the Lexus division. To avoid launching the new brand with only one model, the LS 400, Lexus quickly developed the ES to appear beside its flagship sedan. The smaller car of the initial two-sedan Lexus line-up was called the ES 250, powered by the 2.5 litre, 116 kilowatt V6 of the Camry and aimed directly at the Acura Legend. It was based on the Camry Prominent and Vista of the V20 series, and its design patents were filed in Japan on 17 November 1987 and registered on 8 August 1989. Production started in June 1989 at Tsutsumi and ended on 5 July 1991.
