The CJ-7 had a wheelbase ten inches longer than the CJ-5, with the curved side cutouts partly squared to allow hinged doors, and a chassis whose rear section stepped out so the springs and shocks sat closer to the outside of the body to improve handling and stability. It offered a part time two speed transfer case, automatic transmissions and an automatic all wheel drive system, with a molded hardtop and steel doors optional. Its model years run from 1976 to 1986.
