Honda designed the XR series in Japan and its four stroke off-road motorcycles are assembled all over the world. Some XR models came in two versions: the R version bikes were enduro machines designed for off-road competitive riding, with knobby tires and not always street legal, while the L version models were dual-sport trailbikes fitted with lights, indicators, a horn and street-legal tires. The series ranges from small XR50 and XR100 machines for children and pit bike use to the XR600R and XR650R desert racers, and it was eventually superseded by the CRF lineup. This site lists a page for every model year in the span covered here, each focused on what changed in that year, grouped into 3 generations: the 1979 to 1984 (1979 to 1984 model years); the 1985 to 1999 (1985 to 1999 model years); the 2000 onward (2000 model year onward). Each year page links to its generation, to this model page, to the previous model year and to Honda.
