The third generation Windstar was released for the 2004 model year as the Ford Freestar, a $600 million redesign on the same MV1 platform that focused on driveline reliability, with heavier duty axles, larger wheel bearings, standard four wheel disc brakes and new engines. It was the first Ford designed minivan marketed by Mercury, which launched the Monterey. It sold far under sales projections and was discontinued after 2007. Its model years run from 2004 to 2007.
